Roof Crisis

Today I had an appointment with a roofing company. While I was at my brother Darrell’s life celebration in NY, there was a windstorm in Maryland. I received a text from my neighbor that they were calling the police because something was then hanging from my roof and they are concerned that it is going to hurt somebody. Understandably, so.

I was in the midst of receiving family when I received this message. Quite frankly, I shouldn’t have had my phone on my person (that’s a word right there), but it was. This was prime opportunity for an emotional hijacking. I had already spent a lot of emotion. I was emotionally fragile. Thankfully, I was standing next to my confidant that quickly redirected my attention to the moment at hand and who I was. We prayed. I chose to peace (Phil 4:6).

I tell you this because I have shared that I want to learn to “sleep through storms” (Matthew 8:24). I passed this test with some coaching, but on my own I was certainly prepared to respond emotionally based on circumstances, but not truth.

Yes, it was technically true that in the physical my roof was blowing off and I was hundreds of miles away. Still, I believe in a better word. I walk by Faith, not by sight ( ICorinthians 5:7). Spiritually, I am so loved (I John 4:9-19). I am set apart (Ps 4:3), righteous (I John 3:7), predestined (Rom 8:30) and redeemed (Ps 71:23). I am God’s favorite. I long to live through this identity with my responses rooted in this.

When I returned to my phone later that evening, I was eager to see how God showed up in this situation. Despite the terrible winds, the 10+ ft of metal coping that was hanging from my roof fell and laid perfectly across my entry way without incident. I moved it when I returned home later that evening. There was plenty of opportunity for it to hit or damage any number of things, but it did not! Praise God!

The great thing is that even when I don’t get it right, God promises to make his power perfect in my weaknesses (2 Corin 12:9). Amen to that! I will persevere!

And I hope you know that you are God’s favorite, too! (John 3:16)
